Mental Health and Psychiatric Assessments

Not quite sure what you need? We provide assessment sessions that help clarify your needs and determine a treatment plan.

What is it? By speaking with you and getting to know your situation, we can help figure out whether you need a course of therapy, a psychiatric referral, a psychological or psychoeducational assessment, or something else! Having worked in service navigation, hospitals, schools and the community, our therapists have a very good understanding of how the mental health system works. We will assist you in understanding your options, facilitate any referrals necessary and get you on the right track!

What should I expect? Assessment is usually completed in one session. For the first 40 minutes, you will be asked many questions about your current situation. The therapist will then present their formulation and ideas for moving forward. If more consultation is needed, another appointment may be scheduled, otherwise you and your therapist will set out a clear action plan for you that is tailored to your situation.

We partner with community psychiatrists! Brookhaven is pleased to offer direct access to virtual psychiatric assessments through a partnership with Psychotherapy Matters. Don’t wait months (or years!) for a diagnostic assessment and access to medications - our partnership allows our clients to see a psychiatrist in just a few weeks. Call and ask for more information.

Some important things to know about providers of mental health services:

What is a psychiatrist? Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can determine if symptoms meet diagnostic criteria. Psychiatrists can also prescribe psychotropic medication if clinically indicated. Sometimes, family doctors and paediatricians feel comfortable to take on this role, but will sometimes refer to a psychiatrist for a more thorough, specialized look at a client’s mental health. Currently, there is a significant wait for psychiatry in Ontario. Psychiatric assessments and follow up appointments are covered by OHIP.

What is a psychologist? Psychologists are mental health professionals who hold a doctorate (Ph.D) in psychology. They can diagnose mental health disorders and may provide mental health therapy. They cannot prescribe medications. Psychologists are usually covered under extended insurance benefit plans, and range from $180 to $300+ a session.

What is a Registered Social Worker or Psychotherapist? Registered Social Workers and Psychotherapists both provide mental health therapy (psychotherapy) and general counselling. They provide the bulk of mental health supports in Ontario. They are usually covered under extended insurance benefit plans, and range from $120 to $200 a session.
