Frequently Asked Questions

 FAQs

  • We start with a 50 minute assessment to get to you know the best we can. After assessment, we will suggest a course of action based on your identified goals and problems. We take it session by session, and you are not committed to anything. Most people stay in therapy for anywhere between 6 and 14 sessions, although some for longer and some for shorter. Length of stay is entirely up to you and your therapist, as is the frequency of sessions (Weekly? biweekly? monthly?).

  • That depends! Sometimes, having parents involved in sessions is very helpful to maintain gains made and to reinforce the use of skills. Sometimes clients would rather not have their parents involved (especially teenagers). That’s ok too! We often ask that parents be part of the assessment process to ensure we get the ‘whole picture’.

  • Our fee for a 50 minute virtual session is $160 CAD. Our fee for a 50 minute in-person session ranges from $160 to $180 for individual and $180 to $200 for family and couples. Fees must be paid within 24 hours after your scheduled session. Our fees are similar to what other social workers / psychotherapists charge in the area, and are in line with what is suggested by the regulatory colleges.

  • Probably! If you have private insurance, check to see if they cover social workers and/or psychotherapists, most do! We do not direct bill your insurance provider, but will provide a receipt for you to invoice them yourself. Unfortunately at this time, private social worker and psychotherapy services are not covered by OHIP.

  • This depends on your insurance company. Although you do not need a doctor’s referral to work with us, you may need a doctor’s note recommending psychotherapy or counselling to be able to submit the cost through your extended benefits plan. We are happy to help you navigate this through a 15 minute consultation.

  • Always. Always. Always. Our therapists follow the privacy guidelines outlined in the most updated PHIPA (personal health information protection act). There are some extreme circumstances in which regulated health professionals are obligated to break confidentiality (such as imminent risk or child abuse) and these will be discussed with you during your first meeting.

Records of your visits are kept locked and secured by your therapist. Only if you provide written permission can these records be released, or if they are subpoenaed by the court.

  • If a session is cancelled outside of 24 hours, there is no charge to your account. Late cancellations within 24 hours or no-shows, will be charged 100% of the fee ($160-$180).

Our cancellation policy exists because our therapists (and other self-employed individuals) only get paid based on sessions completed. Late cancellations or no-shows reduce our income by a significant amount.

  • We offer both in-person and virtual appointments. In-person appointments are held at our Burlington location.

  • We use a secure and PHIPPA compliant online booking and video system called JANE. You will receive reminder emails for your sessions, and be able to log in directly on any phone, tablet or computer to join the call.
