Parenting Consultation
Providing support for the world’s most difficult job.
“If only there was a playbook. . .”
Our clinicians provide parenting consultation around a wide range of parenting challenges. Parenting consultation sessions can be provided as a one-time session, as several sessions, or in addition to your child/teen’s individualized therapy sessions. In our experience, we find that improvements in a child or teen’s mental well-being are heavily influenced by parental involvement and style of parenting. We can help with identifying gaps in your current parenting approach and support you in being more directive and in-charge while also being warm and nurturing. Sessions may focus on increasing consistency in your household, improving validation techniques, learning effective ways to reinforce behaviours and appropriate use of punishment.
Common topics we address:
How to deal with lying, stealing or other criminal behaviours
How to improve your relationship with your child
How to support your child when they isolate or fall into patterns of avoidance

Frequently Asked Questions

A parenting consultation is a session where you collaborate with a clinician to improve your parenting style and address parenting challenges at home. It may be a single session, a brief series of sessions, or a session in addition to your child or teen's therapy, depending on your needs. You may work together on consistency, validation, and ways to reinforce good behaviour. Working with a parenting therapist in Ontario gives you practical strategies tailored to your family rather than generic advice.

Both overlap, but they focus on different things. Family therapy typically involves more than one family member. It focuses on the relationships and communication between you and your child, while a parenting consultation focuses on you as the parent and how you can best support your child. We have found that parental engagement and parenting approaches significantly affect a child or young person's mental health and well-being, and these sessions reinforce this. Many parents in our clinic use parent coaching to build their own skills while their child works separately with a therapist.

If a child is testing limits, acting out, or being persistently defiant, it can be helpful to consider the patterns behind the behaviour, not just the behaviour itself. A clinician can help you identify areas where you may be missing and support you in becoming more directive and in control, while remaining warm and nurturing. You'll explore strategies for addressing challenging behaviour, such as setting clearer limits, maintaining consistent routines, and striking an appropriate balance between rewards and consequences. The goal is to help you feel more confident and less locked in a daily power struggle.

Parenting consultations address a range of common and more challenging issues. Common topics include setting boundaries, strengthening your relationship with your child, managing emotional outbursts, and supporting sleep, eating, or screen-time challenges. Sessions can also help with a defiant child and support a child through anxiety, ADHD, or OCD patterns. Whatever you bring, the focus is on practical, workable steps for your specific situation.

The comforting thought is that you don't need to be a perfect parent to raise a healthy, secure child; being caring and responsive most of the time is enough. This removes the pressure to meet an unattainable standard and shifts the focus to warmth, repair after conflict, and a steady presence. During consultations, we help parents release guilt and expand in the areas that matter most. This balance is often a relief for parents who feel they're falling short.

Absolutely, parenting a teen brings its own distinct challenges, from shifting boundaries to communication that suddenly feels harder than it used to be. Support for parenting a teen can help you stay connected while giving your teenager appropriate independence and helping you navigate issues like motivation, screen use, mood, and risk-taking. A clinician can provide consistent support to prevent the relationship from being overshadowed by conflict. With teens, small changes in attitude can make a big difference.
