Can I really receive good therapy in a virtual setting?

There is no arguing that the COVID-19 pandemic shifted our sense of normal. The stress and anxiety caused by the pandemic affected many and had serious negative implications for mental health. In 2021, more than 7 out of 10 Canadians reported being negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many reported feelings of isolation and loneliness which can increase levels of anxiety, depression, among other mental health concerns. During the height of the pandemic, following public precaution, many workplaces and schools made the shift to remote learning and working from home. This shift had positive effects for many including flexibility, reduced costs of transport, more free time, and an improved work-life balance. It also opened our eyes to the possibility of online resources and the benefits they can have.

Now that the worst of the pandemic is behind us many are still thinking about the benefits of online options for work and resources - including mental health treatment. Online options are favoured by many due to their easy accessibility and flexibility. This led the way for the creation of more online resources including online therapy which increases the accessibility to mental health care for all.

History Behind Virtual Therapy

Historically, for some groups, accessing mental health care has proven difficult. This hinders their ability to access effective, timely, and quality mental health treatment. Certain populations such as those in rural communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, communities of colour, and other underrepresented groups face obstacles to getting treatment. This may include things such as...

Potential Barriers to Accessing Mental Health Therapy...

  • Limited access to professionals

  • Limited availability

  • Lack of time

  • Lack of transportation

  • Not knowing where to start

  • Lack of treatment options with flexibility

  • Time commitment

  • Cultural Stigma

In fact, more than 70% of people with mental health issues do not receive any mental health treatment. Therefore, it is crucial to offer alternative options to traditional treatment and provide inclusive options, so more people seek out the services they need. It has been shown to be as effective as in-person therapy and has fueled by the need to meet the demand for mental health services. Moreover, for some people starting therapy may be an intimidating thing. It is a new experience where you might feel vulnerable. Being able to do it from the comfort of your own home may help people feel more comfortable. You can be in your room, in pjs or your comfiest clothes, and even surrounded by your pets too – and for many this may make therapy more approachable.

What is Virtual Therapy?

Virtual Therapy is a powerful and effective way of being treated for a wide range of mental health issues. It allows you to get evidence-based treatment right in the comfort of your own home. Some worry that virtual therapy will be less “personal” compared to traditional in-person therapy - however this is usually not the case. Talk therapy is a way to unpack ourselves in a safe environment with a trained professional. None of this is compromised in a virtual format. In fact, for some, getting therapy from the comfort of your own home and possibly in pajamas can be a more attractive option for a lot of people. There are many types of virtual therapy including...

Types of Virtual Therapy...

  • Virtual Psychotherapy (what we offer at Brookhaven Psychotherapy!)

  • Virtual Physical Therapy

  • Virtual Speech Therapy

  • Virtual Occupational Therapy

These services may be offered on video calling platforms such as Zoom or through email, phone, text messaging, or email. Additionally, typical psychotherapy “homework” used to practice skills learned in therapy may be offered in PDF format to keep the sessions engaging.

Benefits of Virtual Therapy

There are many benefits to Virtual Therapy, and it might just be the right option for you! Between increasing accessibility and being able to be in PJs while working towards our inner goals - what is not to love?

Other benefits include...

  • cost saving

  • client satisfaction

  • equal effectiveness to in-person therapy

  • a good option for remote/rural areas

  • accessibility for people with physical limitations

  • convenience

  • can be more “approachable”; (for those nervous about therapy)

Maybe you’re a parent who can’t find time to squeeze an in-person therapy session in because you also work during the day. Maybe you have physical limitations or do not have a stable way of transport, and this has stopped you from coming to therapy and getting the help you need.

Considering all the benefits, virtual therapy may be an option for you! You no longer have to worry about the weather or count a commute into your day, which may be an attractive option for those who work during the day or parents. It adds an option for those who have been putting off therapy because of the time commitment. Keeping in mind all of the above, if you prefer in-person services, please let us know and we can set you up at one of our offices in Burlington, Oakville or London.
