Virtual therapy is a way to deliver evidence-based treatment right in the comfort of your own home. There are many pros of doing virtual therapy including:

  • Saving time on travelling to/from your appointment

  • Flexible times - including lunch breaks, evenings and weekends

  • For some people struggling with low mood or anxiety about leaving their house, this is an excellent place to start

  • Brookhaven uses videos, activities and PDF booklets that help keep the sessions engaging, for adults and children.

  • Lower chance of having to cancel your appointment due to weather, sickness, transportation issues

  • Pajamas are acceptable!

  • Do the sessions from home, in your office, while on vacation, really…from anywhere!

Will virtual therapy be less “personal”?

Many people worry that virtual therapy will affect their ability to “connect” with their therapist. Although virtual therapy may not be for everyone, it is our experience that it does not affect the relationship between therapist and client. Talk therapy is, in it’s truest form, a way to enhance self-development and “unpack” our complicated selves with a trained and caring individual. None of this is compromised in a virtual format.

How should I prepare for my virtual therapy appointment?

We suggest choosing a location that is quiet, comfortable and feels safe from having anyone in your house overhear your conversation. One of the most important things to consider is - do you have a confidential space to share information? The risk of having a family member overhear you can impede the effectiveness of therapy. We also suggest you consider good lighting so that your therapist can see your facial expressions.

Our video platform works on any computer, phone or tablet - but we recommend a computer for best quality. The larger screen on your end also helps you see your therapist. Other than that, grab a refreshment or snack of your choice, and get comfortable!

How does Brookhaven conduct virtual therapy?

Brookhaven uses an online booking system (Jane) which allows you to keep organized with your sessions and payments. Jane uses a secure video platform (PHIPA compliant) that you can feel confident using, even if you are not the most tech savvy. A link is sent to you 30 minutes before your appointment, and it’s as easy as 1…2…click!
